Mezuzah
The Mezuzah
No, it’s not a Jewish doorbell. It’s a home security device called a Mezuzah, and it’s wired into the Ultimate Protection Agency.
The software inside this gadget is a scroll with the words beginning, “Hear O Israel, the L‑rd is our G‑d; the L‑rd is one.” Those powerful words sum up the mandate of a Jew: to infuse the world with G‑d’s oneness.
Regarding these words, G‑d has commanded us, “And you shall inscribe them on the doorposts of your home, and on your gates” (ibid., verse 9). Hence the Mezuzah: a parchment scroll inscribed with the verses of the Shema prayer is affixed to the right doorpost of every room in a Jewish home.
Whether you're interested in purchasing a Mezuzah or have just moved into a new home and need help to affix the Mezuzah, Rabbi Mendel would be more than happy to help you.
Obtaining Kosher Mezuzahs
Because Mezuzahs must be made according to very exact laws and specifications, only an expert can determine if a Mezuzah is fit for use.
Some basics: The Mezuzah must be hand-written by a competent scribe on specially prepared parchment with the specific types of quill and ink mandated by tradition. All too often, printed or improperly prepared Mezuzahs--or even empty Mezuzah cases--are fraudulently sold. It is therefore extremely important to be sure that your Mezuzah comes from a trusted religious source.
Mezuzah's can be purchased from The Chabad Jewish Centre at a cost of $34.50 per Mezuzah. This includes the Mezuzah scroll as well as the case. In addition, the Rabbi will affix the Mezuzahs at your home or office, free of charge.

Regular Check-Ups
Mezuzah's should be checked by an expert scribe approximately every three years to see if they have been affected by adverse weather conditions, or by folding (which can cause cracks in the letters), or if any other defect has occurred. It is preferable to check Mezuzah's which are on the outside of a building more often, due to their vulnerability to the elements.
If your Mezuzah is due for a check-up, please contact us and we'll be glad to help.
